How Do You Check Your Transmission Fluid?

Are you hearing some weird noises from your transmission? Does it sound like the car/truck is shifting a strange? If it is you might want to check the transmission fluid. You may then ask yourself how do I even check the transmissions fluid?

Checking Your Transmission Fluid is Easy

Park the car & Leave it running

1 – The first thing you need to do is have the car at running temperature and make sure the car is in park or neutral while still on.

Locate and pull out the dip stick

2 – Locate the transmission fluid dipstick. It generally has a yellow or red tab that you grab to pull it out.

Check the fluid

3 – It is important to check the fluid levels and what the actual fluid consist of too. Smear some of the fluid on your thumb from the dipstick. Does it smell burnt? Do you feel particles or metal in it? These could be signs that there is an issue.

Clean the dipstick then check the fluid again

4 – You will want to wipe the dipstick clean then insert it and check the fluid level again. If it says it is lower than normal on the hot side you will want to add some transmission fluid. Each vehicle has its own specifications. Make sure to use the correct fluid the OEM recommends.
